Three Kenyans win right to sue Britain for colonial-era damages
LONDON(AFP) – Three elderly Kenyans who claim they were victims of torture and sexual abuse at the hands of British colonial rulers during the Mau Mau uprising in the 1950s were on Friday given the right to sue Britain.
The judgement came after a two-week hearing in July heard allegations that Jane Muthoni Mara, Paulo Muoka Nzili and Wambugu Wa Nyingi were subjected to torture and sexual mutilation.
The trio’s lawyers said Nzili was castrated, Nyingi severely beaten and Mara subjected to appalling sexual abuse in detention camps during the Mau Mau rebellion.
High Court judge Richard McCombe ruled on Friday that “a fair trial on this part of the case does remain possible and that the evidence on both sides remains significantly cogent for the Court to complete its task satisfactorily”

Overseas education: Senate to ban wards of public officers
There are plans in the Senate to insert a new provision in the constitution that would effectively bar serving political and public office holders including the President, vice president, state governors, ministers, members of the National Assembly as well as others at the state and federal levels from sending their children and wards to schools outside the country.
Already, a bill to that effect has passed through second reading in the Senate and has been referred to the Senate Constitution Amendment Review Committee for listing for further consideration.
The bill sponsored by Senator Basheer Garba Mohammed seeks to bar public office holders including heads of public institutions and directors in agencies from sending their children to schools abroad except for specialisation at post graduate levels or for courses not offered in Nigerians schools.
To achieve its objective, the bill seeks to amend the fifth schedule of the 1999 constitution by providing for a new section 15 which is proposed to prescribe that “a public official shall not send his children or wards abroad for studies on course offered by institutions in Nigeria except for specialisation at postgraduate level”.
Mahram: Who gets the blame?
The concept of mahram in Islam can be viewed in two ways; the aspect of genealogy and that of protection for women. The aspect of genealogy has to do with those who have close consanguinity, like husband, brother, step brother and close family members, a male companion for a woman who cannot marry her.
The other aspect has to do with protection for a woman on a journey that is said to be more than two to three days. Siblings, parents, uncles, step brothers and cousins could serve as mahram because of their close relationship.
Thus, mahram for a woman is someone who, due to closeness of relationship, is forbidden to be married. So, a relative who is called mahram would be honored to care for and protect the woman on a journey from possible abuse. It is generally believed that women feel safe and comfortable in a long journey, accompanied by their own kin. In fact, that is one of the bases for mahram.
It is not an evil assumption about the woman and her manners, as some non-muslims insinuate, but it is to take care of her reputation, dignity and safety. It is to protect her from the desires of those who have diseased hearts, and of course to make her comfortable.

At last, Jonathan appoints new service chiefs
The President named outgoing Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim, as new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) while Rear Admiral Dele Joseph Ezeoba is named new Chief of Naval Staff (CNS).
Jonathan named Air Vice Marshal Alex Sabundu Badeh as the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) while Lt.-Gen Onyabor Azubuike Ihejirika was retained as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The appointment was contained in a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Media, Dr. Reuben Abati in which he said the President also thanked the former service chiefs for their service to the nation.
The delay in the appointment, which is coming a month after the expiration of their tenures, is speculated to have been caused by ethnic politics coupled with intensive lobbying by some influential groups putting pressure on the Presidency.
Appointment of service chiefs usually reflects consideration for professionalism and geo-political zones for balance.

Sisters Of Death- HIV Drugs Served With Dinner
They are the people for whom free anti retroviral treatment was designed; HIV+ women do not have the money to access the medicine they need.
Yet for a group of HIV+ women in various informal settlements in Nairobi, the ARVs they receive do not profit their health, but they do profit from them. Many unsuspecting Kenyans may be settling down to a drink that they've made, using the very same drugs that could save their lives.
Here now is NTV's Jane Ngoiri with a brand new NTV Investigates documentary, on women driven by poverty into a game of chance with their own lives, those of many others.
These are the Sisters of Death.
Police find robbery suspect among recruits
The Nigeria Police College, Kaduna State, on Thursday said it found a robbery suspect among recruits undergoing training in the college.
The commandant of the college, Alhaji Sanusi Rufai, told newsmen in Kaduna that the suspect was named by members of his gang after they were arrested by the police in Abuja.
The commandant said details of the suspect’s identity were forwarded to the college, which withdrew, arrested and transferred him to the appropriate police unit for investigation.
Rufai said the suspect was among 25 recruits the college disqualified for various inadequacies during training, News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The commandant said some of the students were found to have presented forged school results and others had criminal records, “while some were withdrawn on health grounds.”
“Some of the recruits have sight or hearing challenges, while a few others did not attend the schools whose certificates they presented,” he added.
Rufai said the college would continue to screen “unfit persons” out to ensure that only those with good character were allowed to train as policemen and women.
Sperm Selling Business Booming In Ghana
Sperm has become one of the hottest commodities being sold in Ghana and many parts of the world.
The target market for this new booming venture are couples suffering from male infertility, l*sbian couples, and single women who pay huge amounts of money to access it.
According to latest reports, sperm has become one of the hottest commodities being sold in Ghana. The target market for this new booming venture are couples suffering from male infertility, lesbian couples, and single women who pay huge amounts of money to access it.
“Selling of sperm is gradually becoming the new business frontier booming in Ghana because it has many uses in today’s society: making babies, sperm banks, and putting volume in limp hair in order to make it long,” a medical student at the University of Ghana Medical School, who sold sperm five times to a Fertility Centre in Accra for GH¢10, 000 ($5,280), told Economic Tribune (ET).
The medical student, who gave his name only as Mensah, said even though selling of sperm was a risky business, it was also rewarding as well.
“I use the proceeds from this business to pay my fees and also support my close pals. Who knows how long I will continue? But whatever happens, I know I can look back on many happy families that I have helped to create,” he stated.
Mrs Naomi Suame, a shop owner at East Legon and many parts of Accra, has been married for 15 years and has two children, none of whom biologically belongs to her husband.
“I discovered my husband was infertile when we got married after two years. But I wanted to experience motherhood. I decided to have artificial insemination. I have never cheated on him. I just got sperm from a willing seller and got two healthy babies. Is that not wonderful?” she asked. In the case of Naomi, she got a young man from the University of Cape Coast, paid him GH¢12,000 ($6,322) and took his sperm, which she used twice to get the babies.
“Sperm is one of the scared commodities for many of us. There is a high demand for it and many young men are going into this venture selling their sperm to help others, who needs it for one reason or the other,” Naomi explained.
Investigations conducted by ET revealed that due to the huge capital outlay of the process, women have now devised a way of beating the system by getting donors (sperm sellers) whom they take to the Fertility Centres for harvesting at a cheaper cost and then having the sperm induced in their uterus’s

Lady Gaga Called a Drug-Glorifying "Slut" By Satan Island Borough President
"We have to understand there's a tremendous influence with our youth, which I didn't have as a youth. And there's the influence right there. Stop glorifying drug use."
"There's Gaga. Here's this ... I'd call her a slut. This slut is influencing many, many children."
Putting aside his point about marijuana and the obvious counterpoints - weed is legal in the Netherlands, so she broke no laws, and if you don't want Gaga influencing your kids, don't send them to Gaga concerts - the use of "slut" is beyond absurd.
Not according to Molinaro, though. He looked it up!
"Looking up the word 'slut' to see if it was properly used before I used it, it said 'improper conduct,'" Molinaro told the New York Times.
"Now, isn't it improper for someone who is so high profile to be smoking reefer in front of children? I have grandnieces that idolize her - 12 and 13 years old - and it's ridiculous."
"You see these young girls walking around on Halloween with her outfit on."
However, here in 2012, it implies sexual promiscuity, something Gaga has never been associated with; she's in a monogamous relationship with Chicago Fire's Taylor Kinney now.
Molinaro lost his son to an overdose in 2006, and one can certainly respect his anti-drug efforts as a public official to spare other families that unthinkable tragedy.
Nevertheless, his word choice makes unfair assumptions about Lady Gaga's private life and perpetuates misogyny, while singling out a relatively harmless incident no less.
Meanwhile, "slut" Lady Gaga revealed her ongoing struggle with eating disorders and offering support to young men and women who might be experiencing devastating body issues.
What a horrible individual.

Bikini Basketball League: Actually a Thing!
Women in bikinis, balling in an organized league. It was really only a matter of time until someone had this genius idea. Think of the action bikini photos!
There are seven set franchises in six cities:
According to the league’s Twitter, the Chicago Desire, Orlando LadyCats, Miami Spice, L.A. Ice, New York Knockouts, Hollywood Hotties and Atlanta Fleet Angels are set to do battle.
It's like the wildly successful Lingerie Football League, only for basketball. Hot, we guess?
The BBL still has a long way to go, however. It can't even figure out its own name.
The league's website and Twitter aren't on the same page. One calls it the Bikini Basketball Association (as seen in the logo), yet the other refers to it as the Bikini Basketball League.
Either way, the web site declares that action will be underway in just 36 days.
Admit it, you're curious.
President Jonathan lied that Transparency International has endorsed and commended his administration?s war against corruption-
In what appears to be a major credibility stunt, President Jonathan read a speech in which he scored his government high on all sides.
In order to make his good performance appear holistic, the president included in his speech that global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, has endorsed and praised his administration’s war against corruption.
Mr. Jonathan said, “…the fight against the scourge of corruption is a top priority of our administration.
“We are fighting corruption in all facets of our economy, and we are succeeding. We have put an end to several decades of endemic corruption associated with fertilizer and tractor procurement and distribution. We have exposed decades of scam in the management of pensions and fuel subsidy, and ensured that the culprits are being brought to book,” he added.
To give his claims international credibility, the presidents then said: “In its latest report, Transparency International (TI) noted that Nigeria is the second most improved country in the effort to curb corruption.”
The lie PREMIUM TIMES contacted Transparency International seeking a copy of its latest report which the President referred to in his speech.
The group replied promptly disowning Mr. Jonathan and saying it had no such report.
“Transparency International does not have a recent rating or report that places Nigeria as the second most improved country in the fight against corruption,” the group said in an email to this authority.
The group said its most recent indexing of Nigeria’s corruption activities was in the 2011 Corruption Perceptions Index, which measuresd perceived level of public sector corruption in the country.
In that index, Nigeria scored 2.4 on a scale where 0 means highly corrupt and 10 means very clean. It was ranked 143 out of 183 countries.
That rating was actually a dip in performance for Nigeria as the country was rated 134 out of 183 countries the previous year, 2010.
The president’s spokesperson would not comment for this story. The Special Adviser on Media, Reuben Abati as well as the Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, did not answer or return calls.
They also did not reply text messages sent to their telephones.
Nicki Minaj Threatens Mariah Carey With Violence — Durning Idol Taping!
Looks like this feud is real after all!
The mutual hatred between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey came to a head during the auditions in Charlotte Tuesday, when Nicki started screaming and threatening her fellow American Idol
Insiders, who were in the room when the fight went down, say Nicki was screaming at Mariah:
"I'm gonna knock you out!"Then shouted at producers:
"I told them, I'm not f*ckin' putting up with her f*ckin' highness over there."Why were they fighting??
Apparently this whole thing started because they disagreed about a contestant's performance.
OoOoh, that's right! This all went down while they were sitting at the judges table!
We don't know how the contestant reacted to this verbal battle, but we hear Keith Urban — who was sitting in between the lady judges — was pretty shaken!
And he's not the only one — producers are scared out their mind that one of the judges is gonna quit… or worse!
We're praying this is a stunt, but we wouldn't be surprised if this fight is 100 percent authentic. Two divas in one room is NOT a good combo!
Confusing Grammar: Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon Wishes Nigeria Happy Independence
"As we celebrate our flag and shambolic autarky at 52, we must realize that Nigeria is still more of a geographic contrivance as has been rightly posited by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Not with our centrifugal excrescences preponderating over our centripetal proclivities. It’s a matter for mental pabulum that we are daily drifting into our ethnic cocoons.
We still remain one country with disparate ethnic agendas and I can say it for the umpteenth time again that we must sit down in a sovereign national colloquy to discuss the basis for our nationhood. Anything short of this is just vacuous scahiamachy.”
I am already confused before I finished reading it. But I thinks he means that we need to go back to our roots and live as one nation if we want to succeed as a country.
Fauja Singh,101.Is World's Oldest Marathon Runner
But 101-year-old Fauja Singh is one man who isn't shaken by age. At 101 he competes in long distance races, and YES!!! he does run. Amazing isnt it?
He is believed to be the world’s oldest marathon runner after running the Toronto marathon last year, 101-year-old Fauja Singh was competing in Canada again – but this time he didn't even break a sweat.
Thousands turned out to watch Londoner Mr Singh as he ran Surrey 5km race in British Columbia in just 35 minutes.
Mr Singh, who was born in India in 1911, ‘barely broke a sweat’ according to his family, as the centenarian is used to running far longer distances.
Four generations of the Singh family were competing alongside one another in Canada over the weekend, and Mr Singh said he was ‘proud’ to be part of the race.
The Ilford, east London, resident carried the Olympic torch prior to this summer’s Games, and has been part of an Adidas campaign alongside David Beckham and Muhammad Ali during his illustrious running career.
Surprisingly, he only picked up the sport when in his eighties, and has jogged 10 miles a day since.
Mr Singh’s title of ‘world’s oldest marathon runner’ remains unofficial only on a technicality, as he does not have a birth certificate.
After the race, fans of Mr Singh jostled for his autograph, and one banner simply read: ‘Fauja Rocks!’
Mr Singh’s publicist told CTV News that his goal was to inspire people of all ages to get involved in running or physical activity.
Mr Singh, who has run eight marathons, holds the record for the men’s over-90 category after running the Toronto marathon in five hours and 40 minutes in 2003.
He also holds UK records for the 200 metres, 400m, 800m, one mile and 3000m for his age group.
In Canada though, Mr Singh was not out to smash a personal best or break a record. He just wanted to enjoy a comparably short race with his family.
Champion: The Indian-born runner holds a number of records for his remarkable running feats
The marathon man, whose autobiography is titled The Turban Tornado, announced his retirement from longer distance running in April – just before competing in the London marathon.
His trainer Harmander Singh told the BBC before the race: ‘I believe it's probably best that this is the last. I don't think he has anything else to prove.’
Mr Singh says the the secret to staying in shape and being able to conquer his gruelling fitness regime at his age is simple. He eats copious amounts of ginger curry and drinks a lot of tea

Many feel that the visual medium has a greater impact and on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, lists some of the actors who played 'Bapu' with perfection on screen and left an impact on the viewers.
Sir Ben Kingsley: One of the best Gandhi portrayals ever was by Ben Kingsley in Richard Attenborough's 1982 biopic "Gandhi". The reviewers lauded the English actor saying he portrayed the intensity, the wit and even the distinctive determined walk of Bapu.
The film won eight Oscars, including best actor golden statuette for Kingsley. Rajit Kapur: Popularly known as Byomkesh Bakshi, Rajit delivered an award-winning portrayal of Gandhi in the 1996 film "The Making of the Mahatma".
Directed by veteran Shyam Benegal, it recounts 21 years that Gandhiji spent in South Africa and the actor, known for his versatility, pulled it off with aplomb.
Dilip Prabhavalkar: In recent times, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Marathi stage and movie artist, became particularly famous for his portrayal of Gandhi in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's commercial blockbuster "Lagey Raho Munnabhai".
In the film, Sanjay Dutt practises 'Gandhigiri' and he also begins to see the Mahatma, played by Dilip who won a National Award for the best supporting role for his performance in the comedy.
Dilip also reprised the same role in the Telugu version titled "Shankar Dada Zindabad".Darshan Jariwala: Playing Bapu turned out to be lucky for Darshan Jariwala too.
In "Gandhi, My Father", director Feroz Abbas Khan showcased Mahatma's complex relationship with his son Harilal Gandhi. The film didn't do commercially well, but garnered several awards at different award functions and even won Darshan a National Award for the same.
woman who is accused of trying to saw off her husband’s head while he slept
A Washington State woman who is accused of trying to saw off her husband’s head while he slept is on trial this week on charges of attempted murder.
Renee Bishop-McKean was arrested in Everett, Wash., in October after her husband, Brett Bishop, awoke in the middle of the night to find her standing over him with a hand-held electric sabre saw, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in court.
In an attempted-murder trial this week in Everett, the prosecution said Bishop-McKean, 44, plotted the attack for weeks, buying plastic sheets, bleach and garbage bags to clean up the scene, according to ABC News
Bishop-McKean and her husband had been separated but were living together once again on the night of the attack, according to court documents.
Brett Bishop went to sleep first that night, but awoke to the sound of an electric saw revving above him. When he awoke, Bishop-McKean was standing over him, according to the affidavit.
“Renee came at me in the kitchen with the Sawzall [saw] raised up, we had a struggle over it. She kept pulling the trigger to make it run, so I reached out and pulled the battery out of it,” he said in court, according to KOMO.
After the struggle, Bishop-McKean allegedly hit him with a mallet and a hatchet. He was later treated at a hospital for cuts and scrapes, including stitches, the documents said.
Bishop-McKean told police on the night of the attack that she and her husband had both been attacked by an intruder. Her attorney, Ken Lee, told ABC News today that she stands by that story and denies that she tried to kill her husband.
Prosecutors told the jury that if Bishop-McKean had equipped the saw with a sharper blade or aimed the saw closer to her husband’s neck, he might not have had the ability to fend off the attack and would likely be dead, according to the affidavit.
Bishop-McKean is charged with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree domestic violence assault in connection with the attack. Lee declined to provide an opening statement during the trial, and told ABC News that the trial is expected to wrap up Thursday

Suit: Ind. Boy Suffered Sex Abuse From Classmates
The parents of a central Indiana boy are suing Ball State University, alleging their son was subjected to "horrific sexual abuse" by fellow second-graders at a university-run school who they say acted out scenes from pornographic videos they downloaded on school computers.
The lawsuit says the boy was 8 years old when he was forced to engage numerous times in sex acts with other children at Burris Laboratory School in Muncie in late 2011. Four second-grade boys, including the alleged victim and another student described as the "ringleader," are believed to have been involved in the sex abuse, the complaint alleges.
Ball State spokesman Tony Proudfoot said in a written statement that the university learned in December 2011 of allegations of inappropriate behavior among four second-graders at the school. He said the matter was "reported promptly" to local law enforcement and the Indiana Department of Child Services.
Proudfoot would not elaborate on the alleged inappropriate behavior, but he said the claims in the lawsuit "bear no resemblance to the evidence or results of the investigations of the university or those of the agencies to which it was reported."
Chief Deputy Prosecutor Judi Calhoun confirmed Tuesday that the sheriff's department and prosecutor's office investigated the allegations. She said she could not comment on any findings because the matter involved juveniles and such cases are not open to the public.
"All I can say in regard to the matter is that it was investigated," Calhoun said.
Proudfoot's statement noted that "no adults were alleged to be perpetrators of abuse of any child in this matter" and said that the university will "vigorously defend these unwarranted allegations."
Jason Delk, an attorney for the boy's parents, also said he could not comment on what prosecutors or police found. But he said the boy suffered psychological and emotional trauma.
"He's absolutely a victim. I don't know that he's the main victim, but he's certainly a victim of the sexual abuse that was going on at Burris," Delk said Tuesday.
The lawsuit alleges the students had "unfettered access" to the Internet at school and viewed pornographic videos on school computers and iPads. After viewing those video, the lawsuit states, "the students would then 'act out' the scenes" on each other.
All of the boys were students in the same second-grade class and were allowed by their teacher to go on long, unsupervised restroom breaks, the lawsuit states. Most of the alleged sex acts took place in bathrooms, but some occurred in the school's library and in classrooms, the suit contends.
The suit, filed Friday, seeks compensatory and punitive damages. It alleges the boys engaged in at least 11 separate instances of sexual abuse and molestation over three months in late 2011. Delk said all of the boys were around 8 years old.
He said the suit was filed "as a measure of last resort" after discussions with Ball State officials failed to result in "an understanding." He declined to elaborate.

Pope's Butler Told Court He Leaked Private Documents for the Good of the Church
Intrigue, corruption and back-stabbing are clearly not new here at The Vatican, what is new is that Gabriele's indiscretions have opened the doors on Vatican dirty deeds in a way that has never happened before.
Gabriele, 46, worked in Pope Benedict XVI's private apartments overlooking St. Peter's Square. He brought the pope his breakfast, helped him dress and was constantly at his side. No layman was closer to the pope.
Only eight accredited Vatican journalists are allowed to observe the court proceedings, which are conducted only in Italian. They are chosen by lottery.
One of them, veteran Vatican reporter Paddy Agnew of the Irish Times, told ABC News that Gabriele was calm and dignified.
BAKASSI: Peninsula not in 26 districts plebiscite of southern Cameroun
THE Milner/Simone Declaration which showed the partition of Cameroon between Britain and France was not the work of the League. The British and French powers partitioned Cameroons to their satisfaction before they presented it to the League for the Mandate Signature.
That Partition Boundary became the boundary between British and French Cameroons, as contained in the Declaration of July 10, 1919, which Milner and Simone signed. It had nothing to do with the old Anglo-German line of 1914.
American insistence on studying the terms of the Mandate Treaties delayed the signing of the Cameroons Mandates until July 20, 1922. The Americans had hoped that they could persuade their European Allies to abandon the quest for colonies, or for making secret deals among themselves against their enemies. They were wrong. The United States left the League in 1920, disappointed, and by 1922, refused to sign either the League Treaty, or the Treaty of Versailles. Russia, had made her own separate peace with Germany at Brest-Litovsk in 1918, and withdrew from European affairs, to face the challenges of the Bolshevik Revolution at home. So the Great powers left at the League were mainly Britain and France, from 1922. In 1923, a British Order-in-Council made permanent arrangements through which the various parts of the Mandate Territory, under her, were run. In Nigeria, Bakassi continued to remain under British rule.
Professor Gardinier of Yale University, further stated at the Yale University Conference, that Britain pursued different policies in different parts of her Cameroon Mandates.

Floods, tears and blood
Jonathan under attack over anti-corruption claim
The President, relying on a purported rating by Transparency International (TI) – a worldwide corruption watchdog – said Nigeria is “the second most improved country in the effort to curb corruption”, after the United States.
The President’s claim has been denied by TI through an e-mail it sent to Premium Times, an online news portal.
“Transparency International does not have a recent rating or report that places Nigeria as the second most improved country in the fight against corruption,” the email said.
Embarrassed by the denial, an immediate marching order was issued for an investigation into the sources of the report by the President.
Close presidential aides who made input to the President’s speech, it was learnt, met to review the sources of the claim, which was reportedly quoted from BusinessDay report on September 12.
Opposition parties yesterday chided the President for the goof.
How gunmen massacred 40 students in Adamawa
Details of how gunmen massacred about 40 persons
mostly students of tertiary institutions in Mubi, Adamawa state, on Monday night
have emerged as Police confirmed yesterday that the assailants called out names
of the victims before spraying them with bullets.
Also one of the students who survived but pleaded
anonymity said the assailants came in military uniforms at about midnight and
surrounded the compound where they lived after which they started taking the
students outside requesting their names and shooting them at close range.
He said others cut the bodies of the victims with
knives after which they lined up their mutilated corpses in the compound. He
said it was not clear how they chose who to kill and those to spare adding that
victims included Muslims and Christians.
Though the police said 25 persons were killed,
residents insisted that they counted up to 40 bodies after the raid. The corpses
have been deposited at the Mubi General Hospital.
The assailants were said to have stormed the
Wuro-futaji suburb of the area which is populated mostly by off-campus students
of the Adamawa State University, Federal Polytechnic as well as School of Health
Technology, all situated in Mubi at about 11pm and engaged in the killing spree.
Most of those killed were said to be students of the Federal Polytechnic.
An official of the Federal Polytechnic Mubi, who
also pleaded anonymity, however said the gunmen shot sporadically at any moving
person, for over one hour. He confirmed that 26 students of the institution were
among those massacred in the attacks. The others he said were students of the
other two institutions.
Scores who sustained gunshot wounds are said to
be on danger list. A twenty four - hour curfew has already been imposed in the
troubled town.
Though there were speculations that the gunmen
were insurgents, there are indications that the attack may not be unconnected
with disagreements over last Sunday’s Student Union Government elections, which
was heavily contested on sectional divides. Residents who pleaded anonymity said
some of those killed were mostly those deeply involved in the campus
politics.
Adamawa State Police Command, Police Public
Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Ibrahim, said in a phone interview yesterday
that among those killed were 19 students in an off-campus student housing area
as well as other residents including a security guard and a retired
soldier.
He said there were signs that there could be some
internal factors but added that such could not be proven until after
investigations.
“We are just leaving Mubi with the Commissioner
of Police, and Brigade Commander. And it was 19 students that were killed… all
in all it was 25 persons that were killed. Although the investigation is
continuing, there are signs that there may have been some internal factors, but
we cannot prove it until we complete our investigation”, Ibrahim said.
A spokesman for the National Emergency Management
Agency Yushau Shuaib confirmed reports that some of the victims were candidates
in the polls.
“The crisis in Mubi is suspected to have been
fuelled by campus politics after an election at the Federal Polytechnic,” he
said.
The bloody night raid is coming barely a week
after the JTF uncovered bomb factories and arrested 156 suspected terrorists in
Mubi and recovered explosives and other weapons including rifles, mostly brand
new AK 47 sub machine guns.
Following the attacks, security agencies in the
state have deployed additional security personnel to the area.
In the meantime as terrified students and other
residents make attempts to leave Mubi, transport fares out of the troubled town
have been hiked with taxis now charging up to N7000 as against the normal
N1000.
To ease the challenge, the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji
Abubakar Isa Ahmadu, provided six buses to evacuate students just as the
polytechnic authorities have provided a truck to evacuate students to the state
capital. All institutions in Mubi have also been shut indefinitely.
