No crisis in UNIBEN – VC

BENIN—Authorities of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, have faulted an alleged comment by former Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Andrew Onokerhoraye, that there was a pervading crisis in the university due to the absence of a governing council.
The Students Union Government of the university also described as misleading, the comment by the former Vice-Chancellor that student unionism was dead in the university.
Prof. Onokerhoraye had in a recent interview, said the absence of a governing council in the university was causing crisis in the institution, adding also that student unionism in the university was dead unlike when he was in the university as Vice-Chancellor.
Reacting, yesterday, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Osayuki Oshodin, who spoke through the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Harry Osarenren, said there was no crisis in the university.
He said: “We just concluded our 38th Convocation/Founder’s Day ceremonies” where all the unions in the university commended the leadership role of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oshodin.
“There is no doubt that any institution consumed with crisis will not be able to do that successfully. It should also be noted that the constitution of the governing council of a university is the sole prerogative of the Visitor. We know that Onokerhoraye is also aware that UNIBEN is just one of the universities owned by the Federal Government, where a governing council is yet to be put in place.”
