Taraba deputy now acting governor

The Taraba state House of Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution allowing the state deputy governor, Alhaji Garba Umar to act in the capacity of acting governor pending when Governor Danbaba Suntai will fully recover.
Raising it under matters of urgent public importance, Majority Leader of the House, Charles Maijankai, representing Karim Lamido 11 state constituency, said the action was in accordance with the provisions of section 190 sub section 2of the 1999 constitution as amended.
While seconding the motion, Hon Rashida Abdulahi representing Nguroje state constituency said it was not proper for the state to be without a leader, hence the resort to the last constitutional option. .
In his remark, the Speaker, Hon. Istifanus Gbana said the action of the house would clear the ambiguity created by the people who wanted the deputy governor to be sworn in .
The speaker who is also a lawyer, explained further that there was no place in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where it was stipulated that the acting governor should take an oath of office.
He further stated that the House had fulfilled its own obligation in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution by the resolution to swear in the deputy as acting governor.
In his contribution, the Deputy Speaker, Peter Abel Diah said the House had absolute respect for the rule of law and that informed the decision to take the action they took in the best interest of the entire state.
Suntai crashed in a Cessena aircraft in Adamawa state last month and had since been flown to Germany for medical attention.
The sitting was attended by eighteen out of the twenty four members and all of them voted yes for the resolution
