House of Reps seals Kogi Assembly

LOKOJA — Following the leadership crisis that engulfed Kogi State House of Assembly, the House of Representatives has sealed off the state Assembly complex preventing any of the factions from sitting or performing any legislative duties.
Chairman of the six-man ad- hoc committee of the House of Reps set up to look into the crisis, Mohammed Mourktar Ahmed, disclosed this yesterday after holding a public hearing with state legislators at the state Assembly complex.

Ahmed, who said the committee would not recognise any of the factions, stressed that no faction would be allowed to sit or perform any legislative function until the crisis was resolved.

Ahmed argued that if the committee members were unable to ensure quick resolution of the crisis, the House of Representatives would be left with no other option than to take over the legislative duties of the House in line with the country’s constitution that empowered them to do so.

Police arrest 13 persons

Meanwhile, the Police in Kogi said, yesterday, that it has arrested 13 persons in connection with an alleged attempt to disrupt proceedings of members of the House of Representatives who were in the state on a fact- finding mission over the impeachment of the former Speaker, Hon Abdullahi Bello by members of the state legislature.

Kogi State Police spokesman, ASP Ajayi Olusankami, who paraded the suspects before newsmen, yesterday, said: “They were picked up at the premises of the state assembly complex while chanting unscrupulous slogan capable of distracting the peaceful proceedings.”

He said the police acting on intelligence information at its disposal promptly swung into action and apprehended the suspects whom he claimed were political hoodlums.

But in a swift reaction, one of the suspects who said he was a Special Assistant to the embattled former speaker, Abdulmuni Yakubu, denied being political thugs, saying they were in the House on a solidarity mission to their principal.
